12/16/2023 0 Comments Hard drive undock and redockHere’s a quick series of shots that highlights how this works. With the new docking/undocking experience, Windows 11 likewise remembers the layouts of individual windows across multiple displays, and over time. With Snap Layouts, Windows 11 remembers the onscreen positions of windows you’ve arranged with Snap Groups, and it lets you easily reassemble those groups. Click on the device (e.g., external drive) you wish to remove and click on the Stop button. If necessary click/check the Display device components box to expand the view. The Safely Remove window will display any/all detected USB/FireWire devices connected to your Windows computer. When you think about it, the new docking/undocking experience in Windows 11 is very similar to Snap Layouts in that it’s all about remembering window layouts. Simply click on the up arrow and proceed. And as the windows return to the external display, the image on the external display appears to throb and then expand as they reappear. When you re-dock or re-attach an external display, the primary display appears to throb and contract. Microsoft also helps us understand this shift between states with a subtle animation. Maximized windows remain maximized, for example, and floating windows will still float at the same size, and in the same place, as before. So when you re-dock or re-attach the external display, any open windows that were previously on that display return to that display automatically.īetter still, those windows remember their position and size. Now, Windows remembers the positions of windows on external displays. When that happens, you have to undock and redock it (or just turn the computer on by opening the lid, which kind of defeats the purpose of a dock). Not sure if its causing hibernation or what, but Ive checked all the settings. Use the remaing 20 seconds you still have if needed to check your situation. Hitting the power button to shut off makes it so it doesnt turn back on when you press it again. Wait out the 10 sec session timer after which you can redock D. As soon as you see space, hit Ctrl-space to stop your ship. With Windows 11, it’s that latter scenario that changes. If you have no undock bookmark and want to check the outside of station: A. It’s up to you to reposition the windows you want on the external display. If the undock looks clear you are fine to continue, but if the undock is red you can redock after your session timer expires. If you need to undock with hostiles in system, immediately stop your ship and check your surroundings. But when you re-dock or re-attach the external display, nothing happens. Any action taken by you will remove this effect save for completely stopping your ship. If you’re familiar with how multiple displays work in Windows 10, you know that any windows you have open on an external display will move to the primary display (as on a laptop) when you undock or unplug the external display. And it’s as simple to describe as it is wonderful to experience. Those who use a PC with one or more multiple displays will appreciate a major change to how the docking and undocking experience works in Windows 11.
